About One Versus Piece

Spoiler Warning! This website contains spoilers.

Trigger Warning! This is a powerscaling website.

Why do we do this?

Powerscaling has been a fun staple of fantasy universe discussions for a very long time. One Piece as a very battle heavy Shounen makes no exception.

I too became more interested in powerscaling of the One Piece characters towards the end of 2021. Creating a tierlist of characters was very frustrating to me. I could not possibly make a full list of all named figures. But if I left some out, which ones to skip and for what reason? Even if I got this far, there was a lot of information to consider, for example Haki, Devil Fruits, Martial Arts, Age, Rank, etc.

And still! During the Raid On Onigashima we have seen a ton of power ups for many fan favourites. That way characters are always moving up to higher tiers within a tierlist, making it even less accurate and thus less satisfying to me personally.

I have not even mentioned every other readers subjective view of certian characters, or Oda expanding his rules to get the story going where it is needed.

My idea then was to get a large scale 1v1 tournament between all relevant characters going where they fight random opponents. Based on the outcome of every duel a ranking is updated in the background to reflect the relative power of the participants. Basically like the ELO rating system used not only but notably in tournament chess to result in a respectable world ranking.

A friend of mine is sort of coding savy, so I asked what it would take to make such a website where the community can powerscale toghether. He said there was no way for a coding illiterate like me to do it and just started building away. There were some things where I could actually be of some use, but my main part was in putting together the database and images.

How does it work?

When you visit the Versus Page you are shown two random One Piece characters, who I (in my infinite wisdom of scrubbing the wiki late at night) deemed to be at least sort of relevant. You may look at additional information beside their names in the infobox, or even visit the profile pages to get all I have.

Now you can make a decision on who you think would win a 1v1 duel. Clicking the characters name or image registers the win. If you are not sure, just hit skip or equal, to generate a new match or have it end in a draw. The winners rating will go up and the losers down.

For the ratings calculation we are actually using the Glicko-2 rating, which is a more modern and refined ELO-like system. The initial rating for everyone was 1500 points with a 350 points deviation.

You can check the ranking of all active Characters to see our community voted tierlist.

The propability of a character showing up in the Versus Page is higher for those who show up more recently in the Manga. We did this for three reasons, firstly characters who are active more recently have potentially more changes to their canon move sets and stats. Secondly active characters had less time being voted on and need more votes for an accurate rating. And lastly more currently plot relevant characters are usually more interesting for us all to vote on. I would honestly rather see Luffy more frequently than Mr Four.
